UKGC's 2014 Promise vs Where We Actually Ended Up

Been re-reading that old Which? Piece on the lock group fiasco, you know the one — 2014, when the commission was still pretending self-exclusion meant something across the whole market. Makes me laugh now. Not a proper laugh, mind. The kind where you remember being young enough to believe the paperwork.

I'm in a strange spot this evening. Hot run's still warm from Tuesday, mate came through on that thing I mentioned last month, and I actually slept through till six without the 4am balance-check reflex. Proper feed Sunday, phone face down, whole bit. So I'm not here to moan. Just wondering where everyone's sitting with it now — the offshore thing, the timeline, whether any of you still keep one foot in the UKGC world or if you've fully crossed like me.

I remember the 2016 breach case like it was someone else's story I borrowed. Mate of mine, proper punter, excluded himself everywhere he could find the button. Six months later he's tilted on a white-label that'd bought the same database twice. Nothing happened to them. Nothing ever does.

Now I'm Goldenbet and LuckyVibe for cashouts, DragonSlots when I remember to check the max bet rule, and I don't even open the Coral emails. Not out of principle. Just... What's the point? They're not playing the same game we are.

So yeah — how's everyone else navigating it? Still got a UKGC account for the footy multiples, or fully offshore now? Anyone else mapping sister sites while the KYC's warm, or is that just my particular brain

La_Tatiana's not wrong, 2014 feels like ancient history but we're still watching the same loop play out

Nz_kayla you ever wonder if the self-exclusion actually *worked* for anyone back then or if it's always been this patchwork thing

Self-exclusion working in 2014? Mate, that's like asking if my first bonus ever cleared wagering. Technically possible, statistically embarrassing.

The patchwork's the point though, isn't it? Same as now. You hit a mbit or a jackbit, you're playing their game on their island. Sister sites only talk when regulators force the introduction, and even then it's polite nodding, not actual plumbing.

Tbh I skimmed past the "protection" bit of that Which? Piece and went straight to the numbers on how fast the lock group brands popped back up under new skins. That's the tell. Not the failure — the speed of the respawn.

What I actually want to know: anyone here old enough to remember if the 2014 self-exclusion *felt* different to players, or was it always paperwork theatre? I was still grinding live poker then, casinos were just the thing between tournament flights.
