What’s the deal with themed slots?

I’m a sucker for themed slots. Marvel, Game of Thrones, rock bands... you name it, I’ve played it. But the thing is, do these flashy themes actually make the payouts better? Or are they just there to distract you while you bleed chips?

Played this new Viking-themed slot the other day, and man, the visuals were epic. But by the end, I was down $200. Do you guys think these games are worth it, or should we stick to the basics? Let me know your faves or horror stories!
