Boxing is brutal, and we all know the risks, but it never feels real until something like this happens. John Cooney was only 28… that's barely the start of life. He stepped into that ring to defend his title, to prove himself, and now he’s gone.
It’s wild how the same thing that makes boxing so thrilling—the intensity, the heart, the all-or-nothing attitude—is also what makes it so dangerous. The moment a fighter steps into that ring, they’re gambling with more than just wins and losses.
I can’t imagine what his family and fiancée are going through right now. The sport lost a warrior, but they lost a son, a partner, a future. This kind of tragedy shakes the whole community. Maybe it’s time boxing does more to protect fighters, but at the same time, can you ever fully take the risk out of it? I don’t know. Just a brutal, brutal loss.
RIP, champ. You went out fighting.
