Does the number of paylines in slots matter?

So, I was playing some online slots the other night (don’t ask how that went 🤦‍♀️) and I started wondering... Does the number of paylines in slots really matter? Like, I get the basic idea that more paylines give you more chances to win, but do they actually make a difference in the long run?

I mean, I’ve seen games with 10 paylines and others with like 243 ways to win. And then there are those mega crazy ones with thousands of paylines. 😵 But do they pay out better? Or is it just a gimmick to make us feel like we’re winning more often?

Also, do higher paylines mean smaller wins most of the time? I feel like the payouts I’ve been getting on the high-payline slots are way smaller than when I hit something on a classic 3-reel, 5-payline slot. Or am I just overthinking this?

What’s everyone’s take on this? Are high-payline slots actually better for winnings, or is it all just about keeping you playing longer?
