Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts

Tanner McKee, a fourth-year backup, is expected to start at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, CBS Sports reported.

Starter Jalen Hurts has been ruled out with a superficial blood clot.

Kickoff at Lincoln Financial Field is 1 p.m. ET on CBS. The Big Lead reported that the Eagles are 2-3 after a 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London last Sunday.

They have lost three straight.

Why Hurts is out

CBS Sports reported that the clot developed after the Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. It moved after the trip to London, which is why Hurts is unavailable for the Panthers game.

The Big Lead said the Eagles are still working out the best treatment plan.

Neither outlet gives a timeline for his return.

What McKee brings

McKee was the primary backup last season and the third-stringer in 2024. CBS Sports counted six combined appearances and two starts across those years.

He has not played yet this season, The Big Lead noted.

The Big Lead put his career totals at 597 passing yards, five touchdowns and one interception. Last season he threw for 274 yards, one touchdown and one interception in four games.

In 2024 he threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns, with no interceptions, in two games. The Eagles drafted him in the sixth round in 2023 out of Stanford.

CBS Sports traced his path back to Corona Centennial High School in California.

He finished the 2018 recruiting class as the top four-star quarterback and reached No. 38 overall in the 247Sports rankings.

Only Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields and JT Daniels, all five-star prospects, ranked ahead of him among quarterbacks.

Depth chart and what bettors should watch

Rookie Cole Payton is the third option behind McKee, according to CBS Sports. The Eagles released veteran quarterback Andy Dalton on Oct. 9, and The Big Lead said a return for him is possible.

Any move there would change the quarterback picture before or after Sunday.

For bettors, the practical points are limited. CBS Sports described McKee's start as the expectation rather than a formal announcement, so the starter is worth confirming before kickoff.

His sample is six appearances and two starts, spread over three seasons.

A team trying to end a three-game losing run is also handing the job to a quarterback with no snaps this year.

Markets that depend on Eagles passing production will be priced on that small body of work.
