Nba public betting: my small line-move experiment

Ran a quiet little experiment the last three Thursdays — tracking opening lines on the overnight board, then watching where they settle by tip-off. Nothing fancy: I'd note which way the public was leaning on the forum chatter and Reddit, compare that to the move, and see if the sharp side was hiding in plain sight. Sample's only 14 games so far, so I'm not pretending it's science. But three times the line moved against the heavy public side and the underdog covered. Small sample, I know. Still, made me wonder if I'm actually seeing something or just getting lucky on variance.

here's how they shook out, top to bottom:

1. Super Slots — 300 Free Spins No Wagering
2. BetOnline — 100 Free Spins No Wagering (Casino); 50% up to $250 Free Bets (Sports)
3. BitStarz — 300% up to 5 BTC + 180 Free Spins
4. Wild Casino — 250 Free Spins No Wagering
5. Ignition — 300% up to $3,000
6. Dreams Casino — 1110% up to $2,000 + 555 Free Spins
7. Katsubet — 325% up to 5 BTC or $6,000 + 200 Free Spins
8. 7Bit — 325% up to 5.25 BTC + 250 Free Spins
9. mBit — 325% up to 4 BTC + 325 Free Spins
10. Donbet — 10% crypto cashback

Anyone else running something similar, or am I tilting at windmills here?

Three Thursdays — thats the kind of patience most people don't have, mate. Respect for actually logging it instead of just feeling like you know where the money's going.

What you're describing, the public hammering the over and the line still climbing? Thats not noise, thats someone with deeper pockets seeing the same number and disagreeing. The books aren't in the business of giving away free information. If the line moves against the retail flow, there's usually a reason — rest, matchup, something in the injury report that hasn't fully propagated yet.

I've watched that same pattern on the overnight board for years, mostly from the poker room at 2am with the NBA slate open in another tab. The West Coast games are where it gets interesting — line opens, public piles on the favorite, line barely budges or drifts the other way. Thats when I start paying attention. Not always to bet against, just to understand what Im missing.

Your 60/40 split on overs feels about right for this time of year. Post-All-Star, fatigue starts showing up in the box score before it shows up in the line. Teams playing their third in four nights still get bet like theyre fresh because the names on the jersey haven't changed.

Whats your sample looking like now — you tracking results against the moves, or just the moves themselves?

Line stuck flat? That just means sharp money sat it out and the book didn't need to adjust — happens more than you'd think, especially on thursdays when the board's fat with options

Callum_bris, three Thursdays is small data but it's honest data — beats the hell out of "I just know the public's on it."

What's your move when the line *does* shift against the public money — you trust your read or fade your own homework?

Three days I sat on $270, actually slept proper, whole day felt lighter—meanwhile I just cashed out lol

Henryjohn — three days of sleep-weight cash is its own edge, yeah? Ive had runs where the not-playing felt sharper than any +EV line I could find. That lightness you mention, I know it.

Still — "just cashed out" doing any lifting for you now, or you already scanning the next board?
