Is Canada’s sports betting boom good or bad for fans?

Here’s something I’ve been thinking about lately: sports betting is exploding in Canada, but is it really all good for fans? I’m talking about the massive surge in platforms offering bets on everything from hockey to basketball to curling (yes, even curling!). It’s like every sports event now comes with a side of odds and parlays.

On one hand, it’s exciting. Watching a Leafs game feels different when you’ve got $20 riding on Matthews scoring first. And with single-event betting now legal, platforms are getting more creative with their features. Micro-betting, live odds, and even crypto payments are popping up everywhere. But here’s where I’m torn—does this make the game more engaging or just distract us from the pure thrill of the sport?

Some of my friends argue it’s bringing more money into the sports scene, helping teams and events grow. Others say it’s turning fans into gamblers first, fans second. What do you think? Are we heading in the right direction, or does this take something away from the heart of Canadian sports?

I’d love to hear how others feel about this. Whether you’re in Toronto, Vancouver, or Halifax—does betting add to the fun, or are we losing focus on what really matters in sports?
