Is Poker Tracking Software Legal?

I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz lately about poker tracking software and how it can help improve your game by analyzing your hands, opponents' tendencies, etc. But there’s also talk of illegal tracking software, and I’m curious what the actual line is between what’s legal and what’s not.

From what I understand, most sites allow HUDs that show your own stats and track public info from other players during the session. Tools like PokerTracker and Hold’em Manager seem to be widely accepted, especially since they just use data available to anyone at the table. But some software apparently crosses the line, like programs that gather data from other players across multiple sessions or bots that make decisions for you.

What’s the general rule? Are the "legal" ones actually helpful in the long run? And how strict are poker sites at enforcing bans on the illegal stuff? Anyone here have experience with getting flagged for using these tools?

I try to stick to basic tools, but with all the advanced software out there, it’s tempting to wonder where the real advantage lies. Would love to hear some thoughts or stories on this from people who’ve used them.
