Spanish 21 vs blackjack

Hey everyone! I recently got into a discussion with a friend about Spanish 21 and classic blackjack. We were debating which one gives the better odds, and I thought I'd bring the topic here for more insight. Here's what I learned and my two cents about the rules, house edge, and strategy for these two games.

Rules

Spanish 21 tweaks the classic blackjack rules by removing the 10 cards (not face cards) from the deck. This makes the game more challenging since it’s harder to hit those perfect 20s or 21s. However, it offers perks like late surrender, double down rescue, and bonus payouts for 21 with five or more cards. Blackjack keeps it simple—get as close to 21 without busting, but no fancy bonuses.

House Edge

This is where things get spicy. Spanish 21 has a slightly lower house edge—around 0.40% if you play optimally. Classic blackjack can vary between 0.5% to 1%, depending on the table rules. The bonuses in Spanish 21 help reduce the casino’s advantage, but losing those 10s does make it tricky.

Strategy

In blackjack, sticking to basic strategy (based on charts) usually keeps you in the game longer. Spanish 21, though, needs a slightly different approach due to rule variations. For example, you’re encouraged to hit more aggressively in Spanish 21 since those bonuses can change the outcome.

For me, blackjack still feels like the “home base” for card games, but Spanish 21 adds a fun twist if you’re bored of the basics. What about you guys—do you prefer sticking to blackjack or going wild with Spanish 21? Any strategies you swear by for either?
